Sighisoara, one of the oldest cities we visited. The fort and its surroundings are centuries old (I won’t say much here), but they look like it too. The towers embedded in the old walls seem intimidating, fortified and remarkably strong considering the age of their construction. Like many towns near here, the Saxon/Germanic influence is very strong. Our hotel would be a classic example, the Corona Hotel. The area around the fort is full of tourists, which is probably relative, as we don’t see many people on the trail. Except today we saw 3 or 4 small groups, but it’s a Saturday. But the fort was busier than any place we had been so far. Tourists with accents from all over the world, some even recognized us as Australians, congregate in bars, cafes and restaurants or wander the streets panting and speechless. Well, that’s what we do. Here is a surprisingly large Dracula presence. The man I recognize as his father lived here for a while and the castle and surroundings add a certain atmosphere that could (in a pinch) be interpreted as Dracula, but I think it’s quite (or unfairly) aimed at the tourist market.
The last day of our walk was a repeat of what we had become accustomed to. Beautiful forest walk, some meadow walk, but today many hard gravel paths. The ratio would have been a bit higher if Julie hadn’t been yelling, screaming, insulting, scolding and occasionally insisting that she was listening to football. I thought he had been attacked by a dog or eaten by a bear that woke up in the early hours of the morning to see a Brisbane player win a terrific free kick, take a mark or worse yet score a goal. With 3 minutes left in the game two walkers came towards us, I don’t think they even got a wave! We were a little late transitioning at the start today, so I picked up the pace a little, but we definitely got there quite comfortably.
We swam and enjoyed the spa, the swim was cold and the spa quite warm, then we went for a walk around the fort and the surrounding area. The swimming was good, but the spa would be overrated. None of us move freely anymore. I have ice cream, a beer and potato chips (or a
A combination of what we can get). We need to get some food soon, but this place is expensive, so ice cream, beer and potato chips were our starters, then we’ll have something small and stuff for breakfast because we don’t have to walk tomorrow and we don’t actually leave until about 11 o’clock.
