JOUR 1 VICTORIA FALLS ZIMBABWE

Hello everyone

By the time we arrived at Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport we had already had a serious taste of Africa, be it North or Black.!!!!!!

I go to the security check, with my cap, which I kept because of the rain. In front of me, 5 Muslim women, wearing turbans up to their eyes, like Christmas presents, pass through the control without comment and one of my simple caps is removed. Of course I couldn’t help opening it. The answer is not a religious cap. I had to calm down, because I think I’m going to face problems, like on a daily basis, always the same people keeping a low profile to avoid retaliation.

The trip itself was very good, I was 9.30 hours long from Amsterdam to Nairobi, full night, I might have slept 1 hour in short bursts of 10 minutes. In the 3.5 hours between Nairobi and Victoria Falls I didn’t sleep again. I will not have a great memory of Kenya Airways. Without any sarcasm, I find it true that Air France or on-board staff, mostly friendly,

Friendly, courteous.

At V.F Airport at 10:30 am the outside temperature is announced as 38° and the terminal is fully air-conditioned. About a hundred people got off, and it took about 2 hours to stamp passports, and of course I was among the last, in the body odor and heat of the premises, no cigarettes for 24 hours and countless customs. Officers who were laughing out loud, I was borderline nervous.

A shared taxi was waiting for me upon exiting the airport, to drop 8 of his clients at various hotels. It was on this road that I would see my first sign “Caution Elephant Crossing”. Not having my road book memorized, I realized on the plane that I was leaving Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe at noon tomorrow.

So arrived at the hotel, a shower, a taxi, 5th for 15km, and I went straight to the falls. A detailed plan of the route, in my pocket, and I fully covered all the points of interest indicated, 19. Initially the walk was announced as 1.7 km but with all the detours to access the view points it was about 7 km, basically under the blazing sun,

A guide declared over 45°. After 3 hours I returned to the starting point completely shattered. We should not forget the sleepless nights. It’s no secret that I’m not 20 anymore, the taxi left me his phone number for the return trip, what a good idea.

Victoria Falls City is a city located in eastern Zimbabwe, near the falls of the Zambezi River. 991m high, the 35,000 inhabitants all live off the tourism generated by the falls.

The river flows in a gorge 1700 meters wide and 110 meters high. They rival Iguacu (Argentina-Brazil), which I had the opportunity to visit in 2022, as the most beautiful and highest. Heights vary, 80 meters Iguazu 110 here, 3000 meters wide Iguazu, half here, it forms the largest waterfall system in the world.

I give my verdict. I found Iguazu much more beautiful. As you can see in the photo

That Victoria has beautiful waterfalls but there are many dry areas that should be in water and that are not because of the drought that has been going on for several years. And we are at the end of monsoon. Which means that in no time there will only be a stream of water. Generally Victoria should be more beautiful, because the waterfalls are concentrated in a small area.

Tomorrow I have the morning to visit Victoria Falls, from what I saw this afternoon, I think it will be early.

At noon a driver comes to pick me up, to drive through Botswana, and tomorrow I sleep on an island in the middle of the Chobe River surrounded by hippos and crocodiles.

It is 7 p.m., and the thermometer is still at 35°.
